Guyana will continue ‘independent’ foreign policy - Jagdeo Wednesday, March 03, 2010
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC)
The Guyana government says it will continue to pursue an independent foreign policy intended to further develop the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
"We are not here to please any country—we are here to look after the interest of our people. Of course there is global solidarity, etcetera, but I am not going to determine our policies on whether the United States likes it or not," President Bharrat Jagdeo said as he addressed members of the Windsor Forest Masjid on Sunday February 28.
Jagdeo said his recent visit to the Middle East was also intended to expand relations in a merging dynamic world, of which the Middle East is an important part.
"The Middle East is a very important part of the future, not just because many people share their predominant faith in that part of the world, but also because it a very important source of investment and trade."
He referred also to suggestions by critics that his visit to Iran would affect ties with Washington.
not offended
"The United States never said to me that they were offended and I was pleased that President (Barack) Obama named an envoy to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC)," he said.
Jagdeo said that there is a kind of mental slavery existing among some Guyanese, who, he said, are yet to emancipate themselves.
