Brooklyn cries ‘help’ for Haiti Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Special assistant to the Brooklyn Borough president, Yvonne Graham, is appealing to the public to donate desperately needed supplies for storm-ravaged Haiti.
Graham, on the weekend, joined leaders of the Haitian community and elected officials gathered at the Flatbush Reformed Church in Brooklyn in calling for increased assistance for the thousands of Haitians rendered homeless by four hurricanes, which decimated the country recently. The storms – Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike – flooded farmlands and destroyed houses and infrastructure.
common motto
“I know that Brooklynites have come together to support natural disaster relief efforts around the world, and that we all share the same compassion for the residents of Haiti. After all, Brooklyn shares a common motto with Haiti: “In unity there is strength,” said Special Assistant Graham.
Governor David Paterson has directed the opening of the New York Army National Guard Armory in Brooklyn to allow for the collection of donated relief supplies. The facility at 1579 Bedford Avenue at Union Street will be open through September 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Soldiers from the New York National Guard will be on hand to receive, sort and prepare for shipment donated items for the citizens of Haiti. In addition, the state is accepting donated items at the Adam Clayton Powell State Office building (West 125th Street & Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.) in Harlem.
Items needed include cases of bottled water, rice, canned or dried beans, sterno canisters, tarpaulin, nylon cord (100’ rolls), toothbrushes, toothpaste, mild soaps, new underclothes – children sizes and new hand towels.
For more information or to assist, please email relief@chamber.state.ny.us or call (212) 681-4010.
